Are you wondering what's the next step in your career?
One way to start to make this clearer is to look back on your career journey so far.
Your Career Lifeline is a useful technique to help you reflect on your experiences-highs, lows, and key events that have influenced your career.
Your Career Lifeline helps to give shape to the past rather than see it as a confusing jumble of events and experiences.
It helps you to understand where you are now.
This can be the first step towards considering the future and moving forward.
As this will help you gain insights and can influence your future career decisions.
Want to know how to create Your Career Lifeline?
Begin by filling out the 3 columns- career journey - study/professional development- life events, starting from your first career experience to the present day.
Note down key events in your career, study and life.
Label each one with a letter from A-Z.
Here is my example, to give you an idea of what the exercise can look like.
Once you have all the key events written down, find a large A3 piece of paper, tape two A4 pieces together or use butcher’s paper and draw up the high and low scale vertical with a horizontal line in the centre.
Referring to your list mark out each event high or low on the scale.
Be creative, play music, use fancy pens, textas and begin.
Go with your first thought about it being a high or a low.
There is no wrong way to do this!

Identify one pivotal moment that change the trajectory of your life.
Doing my own Career Lifeline was an eye-opener and connected many dots.
It showed my first pivotal moment, when the tree fell how much it changed my life and my second pivotal moment was my Career Crisis.
It also showed me this wasn’t the first time I had been in a Career Crisis.
Throughout my career, I have had many smaller crisis’, all resulting from an unexpected change, leaving me in a state of ‘I don’t know’ which I marked as a low.
This activity has shown me, a low will often get you on track for a high. It is a pivotal moment, not a negative, we just label it negative.
How did you go?
I'd love to hear from you.
