What is the #1 thing holding you back?

Have you ever felt there was something holding you back from taking the next step in your career?

Everyone, at some stage in their career will be hesitant, feel an inner resistance or overwhelmed at the thought of making changes.

A recent study on fears and phobias at work suggested the most common concern employees battle with is around making work-related decisions.

I have found from coaching hundreds of professionals throughout their career journeys, there is more than fears holding people back, there are 5 common reasons;

  1. Fears

  2. Inner Critic

  3. Limiting Beliefs

  4. Low confidence

  5. Pain of your career past

There was this one time a client said, in our first session they had been considering making a change in their career for about 5 years now.

It got to a point where his wife said 'if you don't go and do something about it, I'm not sure how much longer I can hear you talk about it'.

I can relate. 🙋‍♀️

I knew my last career, as a teacher wasn't right for a long time, and I kept putting it off to really think about.

Until life forced me to think about it.

What I realised, after everything I had been through in a natural disaster and a career crisis, working through the obstacles that held me back was worth it.

I've noticed something within myself and my clients, when you acknowledge what's holding you back, look at it from a neutral perspective and give it space to come to surface.

It loses its hold on you.

Sometimes this can be done yourself and other times it is best to work with a career counsellor to work through these big challenges as they arise.

Then you can take the next step forward.

If you were to name the #1 thing holding you back from taking the next step in your career, what would that be?

I love supporting clients through these blocks, hurdles and obstacles holding them back. It's one of my superpowers- to create a safe space so you can move through what comes up.
